If I go talk to a military recruiter, how long will it take for me to begin training and then start work?

How quickly you ship depends on which branch of service you choose and which job you choose. You could leave in a month or you could leave in a year depending on what you want. As soon as you ship you will attend your initial entry training and shortly thereafter (depending on the job) you will be at your first assignment hard at work.
