Can you play starcraft over a VPN on mac?

My friend and I hate using battlenet because it's always laggy for us, so I figured a simple VPN connection would do the trick, so we're both on macs using hamachi, but it's not working. I've read stuff about having to use a UDP connection or something like that but I'm somewhat of a noob. Any suggestions?
